About
So you want to learn more about me? About my situation? Well, really it’s us. We’re a married couple in our mid-thirties. We have two children, own two cars and home on Long Island. My wife is in college (part time) and takes care our children during the day. She is also trying to sell Avon and watch others children when ever possible.
I am in the computer/internet field. I do not have a college education but I do have years and years of experience. I have been working for the same company for the last 7 years. Prior to that I was with another computer company for 5 years. I also do as much consulting and freelance work as possible. As you’ll read me mention here and there I try to learn as much possible to keep my skills as fresh and up-to-date as possible. I’m currently trying to learn how to make money on the internet. I’m not exactly that good at it, but it’s fun to learn and something I enjoy doing when the kids go to bed.
How did we get here you ask? Man, that’s a hard question…. One that I’m not totally sure myself. I can tell you that when we bought our house we were both employed. Losing one income has been devistating for us. My continued freelance/consulting work has always gotten us by. It allowed us to continue living on Long Island. We were never the king & queen of the block, nor did we ever have much beyond window decorations when it came time for the block to judge who had the best decorations. We just got by. We cut coupons, we used websites to help find the cheapest gas and oil for our home. We just did it…
That was until a year or so ago when companies that would normally hire me to help them do work stopped. When local companies and referrals from companies to have me do this or do that for them stopped. Companies (from Mom & Pop to smaller/medium sized) can no longer afford the extras they used to. They’ll “get by with what they have” for now, or at least until economic times get better. Many companies like to or try to barter with me. Sometimes it’s for the good and I can then sell their product or in some way utilize for us. Other times it holds no value to us and point blank won’t put food on the table for my kids.
As all of this is happening we’re getting more and more behind on our bills. New collections letters are showing up daily. It’s gotten to the point that the voice mail is full and we don’t even check the messages anymore. Our take on it was if it’s full then they couldn’t leave us any more messages. If we didn’t know your phone number they would be greeted with a message alerting them that my mailbox was full.
The pressure and stress of all of this and the tears from both my wife and I brought us to a debt consolodation service. The fee’s were nominal and the idea was certainly a good one. One that if I stuck with it, worked a second full time job and cut back on some things we could get out of this hole in 5 years. We made it 3 months on the program before dropping it. That’s when we decided to go meet with a bankruptcy attorney… read more here
That’s really it. We are two 30ish adults living on Long Island with two kids and we’re bankrupt. You’d never know it though. Know what though? We’re getting by….
